Why your domain matters more than it seems

A domain name is the one piece of your online identity that you cannot easily change later. Your website, your email address, your Google listing, your invoices and your marketing links all depend on it. A business that starts on a free address or a personal email looks less established, and it can be harder to be taken seriously by banks, payment processors and enterprise customers who check where an email came from.

For a US company with owners abroad, the domain also helps with credibility. A customer in Texas who receives a message from a company address that matches the company name on its invoice is far more likely to trust it than one from a free webmail address.

Choosing a name that works

The best domains are short, easy to say out loud and easy to spell after hearing them once. A few practical rules help.

  • Match your company name where you can. If your LLC is Acme Digital LLC, acmedigital.com is the natural choice.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers. They are hard to explain over the phone and easy to mistype.
  • Prefer .com. It is still the extension people try first, and many will assume it when they type your name.
  • Say it aloud. If you have to spell it, it is probably too complicated.
  • Check the name is not close to an established brand. A confusingly similar name can lead to disputes, and a trademark search is worthwhile for names you plan to build on.

If your first choice is taken, we suggest alternatives close to it, such as adding a short descriptive word or choosing .net. We will not buy a domain from another owner on your behalf unless you ask for that as a separate task.

What we do

  1. You give us your preferred name and, if you have one, a few backups.
  2. We check availability for .com and .net and tell you what is free.
  3. You confirm the name and the extension.
  4. We register it to your company for one year, using your company's details as the owner.
  5. We configure the DNS records so the domain is ready to be used with your email and website.
  6. You receive the registrar login details and a summary of the renewal date.

The registration is made in your company's name from the start. That matters, because a domain registered to an agency or a freelancer can be difficult to recover if that relationship ends.

DNS in plain language

DNS is the system that tells the internet where your domain points. A few records control most of what matters to a small business. An A or CNAME record sends visitors to your website. MX records tell the world which service receives your email. TXT records, such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC, prove that mail sent from your domain is genuine so it does not land in spam folders.

Getting these wrong is a common reason a new company's email never arrives or goes to junk. We set the records the first time, to match the services you actually use, so you do not need to learn the details.

Domain and company name: how they relate

Your company's legal name and your domain do not have to match, but they should be easy to connect. If your LLC is registered as Northwind Holdings LLC but you trade as Northwind Studio, a domain based on the trading name is fine, as long as you use that name consistently and consider registering it as a DBA where your state requires it.

Registering a domain does not give you legal ownership of the name as a brand. For that you would file a trademark, which we also offer. A domain is first-come, first-served, and only a trademark gives you the legal right to stop someone else using a confusingly similar brand.

Privacy and ownership

When a domain is registered, the owner's details are recorded with the registrar. Many registrars offer a privacy option that hides personal contact details from public lookup, so spammers cannot collect them. We register using your company details and tell you what is shown, so the information that appears is the information you chose to put there.

Ownership stays with you. You receive the registrar account details and can transfer the domain away at any time after the registrar's standard waiting period for new registrations.

Renewals and expiry

The fee on this page covers the first year. Domains expire quietly, and a lapsed domain can be picked up by someone else, taking your website and email down with it. We send a reminder well ahead of the date so you can renew, and we can renew it for you if you ask.

If you want to avoid the risk altogether, you can turn on automatic renewal with the registrar after we hand over the account. Make sure the payment card on file stays current.

Pair it with the rest of your launch

  • Business Email Setup puts professional mailboxes on your new domain.
  • Basic Portfolio Website and Premium Website Development build the site that lives at it.
  • US Trademark protects the brand name behind the domain.

Ordering these together lets us do the DNS work once instead of three times, and means your email and website go live in the right order.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Registering the domain in a personal name or a freelancer's account, then being unable to move it later.
  • Letting the registration lapse because the reminder went to an old email address.
  • Choosing a name that is a near-copy of an established brand, which can lead to a dispute and a forced transfer.
  • Buying many variants you do not need, which adds renewal costs year after year.
  • Ignoring email authentication records, so mail from your own domain goes to spam.

Each of these is easy to avoid at the start and annoying to fix later. A few minutes of care when you register is worth far more than the registration fee.

What is not included

It helps to be clear about the edges of this service. The fee covers registration of one domain for one year and the DNS setup described above. It does not include a website, email mailboxes, hosting, a logo or a trademark search. Those are separate services that you can add on this page or from your dashboard.

Premium domains, meaning names that are already owned and listed for resale, are priced by their owners and can cost far more than a normal registration. If the name you want is one of those, tell us and we will help you assess whether it is worth the cost, but the purchase price is separate from our fee.

How long it takes

Registration itself is fast. Once you confirm the name, we register it and the domain is normally active within hours, although DNS changes can take a little longer to spread across the internet. If you are also setting up email, mail may take some time to start flowing while those changes propagate, and we tell you when it is safe to start using the address.

The slower part is usually deciding on the name. If you can, send two or three options in order of preference so we can move straight to the next if the first is taken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which domain extensions can you register?

We register .com and .net domains. If you want another extension, tell us in the order notes and we will confirm what is available.

Will the domain be in my name or yours?

It is registered to your company, and you receive the registrar details so you stay in control. We do not hold it hostage.

How long does the registration last?

The fee covers the first year. We remind you before it ends so you can renew.

What if the domain I want is taken?

We suggest close alternatives, such as a different wording or extension. We do not purchase domains from other owners unless you ask for that separately.

Can you set up my business email on the domain?

Yes. Our Business Email Setup service configures email on the domain, and the DNS records are done together.

Do I get a website with the domain?

A domain is the address only. Our website services build the site that lives at it.
